Food adulteration is basically changing the true quality of pure foods by adding chemical additives. It spans from adding mild chemical preservatives to extremely harmful substances. Be it poultry, fruits, spices, and even daily bakery items; everything is getting adulterated nowadays. The reason for adding preservatives to the food is obvious: to get more profit out of the scope. And that is why it is getting out of control only because of the endless green of dishonest and immoral businessman. Chemical additives are used to extend the shelf life of the products. The longer a product remains in good condition, the easier it is to sell it to unsuspecting customers. Mango, for example, is a perishable food. Thousands of tons of mango are produced each year throughout the summer, and to ensure that all mangoes are sold before they perish, businessmen use compounds such as formalin. Furthermore, fruits are injected with compounds such as Carbide, one of the most damaging chemicals to the human body, to make them appear ripe and appealing to customers. Fruits are injected with sugary or colored water to improve their taste. Harmful chemical colors get added in regular foods like spices, milk gets water added to increase the quantity.

Poultry farms provide hazardous substances to animals in order to enhance their size so that they can be sold in larger quantities. Not only that, but expensive products are also blended with obfuscating ingredients in order to boost the quantity and profit margin. Because there aren’t enough strong government regulations and implementations, this horrible conduct is spiraling out of hand. Furthermore, detecting goods containing chemicals is difficult across the country. Due to the availability of dangerous compounds such as DDT, Aldrin, Formalin, Chlordane, and others, even micro-level vendors can poison meals. Mobile courts prowl the streets, identifying and punishing vendors, but uprooting criminals from their cores will be impossible unless the search radius expands.

 

However, many retailers offer goods that are free of dangerous ingredients, which necessitates a slight price increase. People in a middle-income country like Bangladesh, on the other hand, will never be prepared to pay more money to avoid such things. Consumption of dangerous chemicals on a small scale may not have an immediate effect, but they will eventually cause major physical damage and diseases such as cancer, lung disease, kidney failure, and others. Many of our citizens live in poverty, and the majority are unaware of the harmful and long-term consequences. As a result, making consumers aware of such situations will not make them eager to pay a premium price for pure commodities. This is exactly the point the selfish businessmen are getting their additional profit from.

Adulteration of food refers to the addition or mixing of another material to a food item in order to increase profit, preserve it for a longer period of time, or make it more palatable. It degrades the actual quality of the food and poses a health risk. It is regarded as one of our country’s most serious issues. There isn’t much food that hasn’t been tampered with in some way. Adulterated food has a number of negative consequences. They are generally damaging to one’s health and can result in major health issues such as digestive issues, diarrhea, dysentery, cancer, kidney failure, and heart difficulties, among other things. Adulterated foods are nothing more than a slow toxin that kills people over time. Nowadays adulteration of food in our country is so widespread that it is difficult to find a food item which is safe to eat.

Milk and milk products are under-processed, vegetables include pesticides, fish is preserved with formalin, and fruits are kept with toxic chemicals. According to a recent survey done in some regions of Dhaka city, DDT, Aldrin, and other hazardous chemicals were found in 40% of 82 percent of milk, fish, fruits, and vegetables samples. It is well recognized that strict monitoring and oversight during the manufacturing process can significantly reduce food adulteration. It is impossible for the government to manage widespread food adulteration on its own. The general people should be aware of the problem and should reject the product that has been found to be tainted. In addition, the government must establish tough anti-adulteration legislation. Capital punishment should be ensured to the dishonest traders who are involved in food adulteration.
